G Jones – Artist Spotlight

Continuing our Second Sky lineup prep, this week I wanted to get a good sense of G Jones.

I first discovered Greg while prepping for Forest last year and my first impressions were that it was a bit too bass’y for my tastes.

We ended up skipping his set B2B Eprom and it was probably my biggest regret of the whole festival. Our camping neighbors said it was one of the craziest live shows they’d ever been a part of (and these were seasoned festival goers).

This is consistent with everything I’ve read about the guy, from fans to fellow artists.

Porter is 100% on board this hype train.

G Jones has always had something of a cryptic reputation, thrust into the spotlight after DJ Shadow called him “the most gifted Ableton beatmaker I’ve ever seen.

Heavily influenced by Aphex Twin, G Jones sound has been called both genre-bending and genre-defying but in his own words he produces “trippy, broken beat bass music.

The Ineffable Truth, which dropped last year, is a full exploration of what it means to produce experimental electronic. I’ve pulled out a few of my favorites to get you into his zone:

  • Time – This is almost 2 tracks in one, throwing a dirty mix at you at the beginning, coming full stop then taking hold of you through 4 minutes of rolling basslines.
  • In Your Head – My favorite dance track on the record. Keeps you on your toes from start to finish.
  • Everything All At Once – So different from the heavy bass of the rest of the album…I honestly had to check to make sure I didn’t some some random shuffle playlist going and it was still G Jones
  • Understanding the Possibility – This is for the true fans of experimental electronic (prob not as much for the casual listener). There’s nothing being produced right now that comes anywhere close to this.
