Genius.com Outsmarts Google

Last week I was in Philly for Seerfest, a digital marketing conference hosted by the agency that launched my career.

A major focus of the event was how marketers have to adapt to a world where Google no longer requires the user to visit your site to consume your content. But if Google is going to show your content directly in their results, don’t you think you should get credit?

Genius.com was able to prove that Google was scraping their content by watermarking the lyrics with a specific combination of straight and curved apostrophes. When placed side-by-side with the search results, the writing is literally on the wall.

My favorite part is that some marketer knew Genius could maximize press coverage with a cheeky tagline in Morse code. Mission accomplished, my friend.
