Mija Artist Spotlight

I was looking for something to do during an overnight to Orlando when I stumbled across Mija playing a set about 2 blocks from my hotel. Her most streamed track on Spotify is a collab with Vindata (who co-produced probably my favorite Bassnectar track), so we had some early points in our favor.

Helluva an origin story too…

At her 22nd birthday party in Arizona, the people behind the Burning Man–famous Kalliope car heard Giles on the decks and asked her to play for them at Bonnaroo. On that festival’s final morning, Skrillex turned up at the Kalliope after-party and asked Giles, who had just adopted Mija as her stage name, if he could play back-to-back with her.

A Chance DJ Set With Skrillex Helped Make Mija a Rising Star of EDM – LA Weekly

Imagine DJing on top of this thing (at sunrise no less) and Skrillex comes up and asks to join you. WYD?

That set went on to get a ton of attention and effectively launched her career. Haven’t had a chance to listen to the whole set yet but the first 10-15 minutes is superb deep house vibes. Would recommend.

She refers to her style as FK A GENRE, which about sums up her ethos as far as I can tell. I’d consider my headphones to be fairly well traveled but still a lot of uncharted territory for me on her FK A GENRE playlist. What I do recognize certainly gets the stamp of approval (Flume, LCD Soundsystem, Phantogram, deadmau5, Porter, Justin Jay).

time stops when i’m with you made the playlist this week, admittedly as an Honorable Mention. K Pop stylings, throws me headfirst into a Nintendo arena where the only goal is MOAR COINS.
