It’s 2020, which means it’s time for us documentarians to start cataloging our 2019 content. That’s why I’ve spent the last week spinning the Best of Better Spins 2019. 672 songs, 44hrs of music. Hand-picked by yours truly.
Although the newsletter is only a year old, Better Spins as a music curation project goes back to March 2012 when I spun up my first monthly playlist. I set the bar super low: as long as a song caught my attention somehow, it made the playlist.
Nearly 8 years later, I have a highly detailed record of how my music tastes matured with me. When I started this project, I was 24yrs old living in Atlanta. @annevsnyder in law school, I played ultimate frisbee 2x/week and a weekly poker tournament. I was saving for an engagement ring.
I went to 1 concert that year: Yellowcard @ The Tabernacle. A teenager had to return the flop flop I lost in the mosh pit and then I threw up on the sidewalk. Anne was thrilled.
Life is different now. But hey, I still got to spend 36 of the 365 days in 2019 at a concert (closed toed shoes only).
While I’m all for submitting to the Spotify AI machine, there’s something to be said for a personally curated mix. I encourage you all to start tagging songs you like and building your own Year in Review, it’s pretty cool once you build up your catalog.
